Windows formatted drives will not be recognized as audio drives by Pro Tools on the Mac. In order to use Mac HFS+ formatted drives on Windows systems, MacDrive is required. Although FireWire drives can be hot-swapped without rebooting the host computer, it is necessary to quit Pro Tools before swapping drives and then re-launching Pro Tools. It will mean having to discard my present 500gb drive or give it away but might solve my problem. However after much thought it’s possible that I can buy a new 3TB drive for the approx same price as a new WD 1TB My Book.

Obviously you wont get the speeds but at least you can still use the device. Soon they will be installing usb ports on wall outlets.So many things use usb. Apple needs to suck it up and just put USB 3.0 ports on their computers. How does a hard drive work?
